In these pieces I designed a diverse range of fruit inspired characters. I wanted to showcase people’s individuality and expression in a fun, bright way and encourage people to be their most outrageous selves. By having these characters rely on fruit for identification it removes the need for gender, sexuality, race, or other categories that can leave people feeling trapped or isolated. Instead, the viewer is urged to embrace the character exactly as they are.

When I paint, I usually start with a basic idea or feeling that I want to communicate and let my hand do the rest. I like the organic feel of letting myself create without strict boundaries, and I find the best medium for that is oils.
With this piece, I started with the idea of solidarity. I wanted to express the feeling of how minorities each struggle with their own grievances, yet stand with each other. And while no one can fully understand the difficulties of another, we can use past experience or listen to the experiences of others to better cultivate empathy.

In this series my focus was on the meaning of the Lotus flower and I created my interpretation of “rebirth.” In the first illustration we have the dark, underwater scene of a woman discovering a lotus flower, or a hope of regaining herself. In the second illustration she has emerged out of the darkness and is embracing the flower. I love to grapple with difficult or meaningful ideas in my art, exploring them through either striking or whimsical digital illustration.
